What is May Gibbs famous for?
May Gibbs was one of Australia’s foremost children’s authors and illustrators who has captured the hearts and imaginations of generations of Australians with her lovable bush characters and fairytale landscapes.
May Gibbs is best known today for the iconic Australian children’s story, The Complete Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, featuring two gumnut babies, who became a symbol of Australia’s bush culture in the early twentieth century. Her work also features an array of other characters including Little Black Sambo, Uncle Wattlebird and Aunt Grumblegrumble, Billy Bantam and his Dog Rover, Mr Crowquill to name a few…
May Gibbs was born in Melbourne, Australia on October 4th 1877. She died at her home in Sydney on January 21st 1969 at the age of 91 years old.
